We started working with the University of Sunderland at the end of 2022; our role was to help them confirm a new building for their London Campus and to manage the construction through to completion. We work-shopped and formulated a detailed brief with the UoS project team and space planned options in 3 buildings until a preferred site was identified. 2 buildings were subsequently short-listed, and both were developed with performance specifications and budgets. Harbour Exchange was finally selected and for several reasons, most importantly its geography and dedicated ground floor entrance.
Once layouts for HX4&5 were finalised, these along with the performance specification were used to develop the tender pack for a Design and Build contract of works. The tender was issued through the government portal, and 3 companies were short-listed to move to the next stage. Following contractor presentations with developed designs, Maris were selected as the preferred choice.
The Maris design was both bold and calming, and although the project became significantly more complicated with areas of construction being added as it developed, the overall project has been an enormous success. Whilst the build was in progress it became apparent that the University needed some assistance managing the move from their old campus to the new. We were subsequently instructed to support them with the planning of the relocation and to tender and manage the works
