Arden engaged us to support the creation of a new London university campus in the Turing building, Stratford. Alongside the project management, we also undertook a feasibility study, space planning and tender organisation. The facility provided 94,000 ft² of space across 7 floors and included separate educational and office space. The student space was located on the lower floors and the office space on the upper floors.
Due to the building being already designated with a F1 classification, there was no need for additional fresh air provision. However, new wide staircases and disabled lifts were installed to facilitate traffic from the ground floor entrance lobby/reception to the upper floors. Initial space planning ensured the maximum number of students within the current fire strategy, and we used a 70% diversity factor for expected occupation. The design included a large multifunctional event space on the 6th floor and smaller breakout areas on each floor. The 1st floor included the student services offices and meeting rooms with additional toilets to support expected headcount and staff spaces were also located on each of the teaching
floors.
Arden requested a colourful scheme, without too many white walls, and the successful tenderer (Maris) provided a vibrant colour blocked scheme, with carefully placed acoustic panels, to great effect. A colourful branded reception area, breakout spaces and student services areas were also included in the scheme.
